The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why – Mark Twain

Discovering your purpose requires of us to ask a series of fundamental questions:

Who am I’?
Why am I?
What am I?

The process of introspection and contemplation of the above questions leads us on a path that ultimately propels us into moments of clarity where we proclaim

I am…
A student
A teacher
A leader
And so on…

Yet these are all identities that may or may not be representative of the who, what and the why of the ‘I am’

When we embody the identity of say a teacher, I am striving to live by a set of standards that reflect the qualities of a teacher

The first step is to define your character strengths or values

For example:
I am a teacher who values the effort, commitment and dedication of his students

It’s the values I profess and act out as a teacher that defines what I stand for

Yet is that sufficient enough to define my purpose as a teacher?

Not entirely yet at least

The other side of the equation is clarifying your ultimate mission

As a teacher my mission is to maximise the impact on the lives of my students by empowering them with frameworks for true success in business and in life…

Are we closer to our purpose now? Yes we are

The formulae I have learned, adopted and apply within the Legacy Program is

UMS (Ultimate Mission Statement) + CS (Character Strengths) = L (Legacy)

The bedrock of living on purpose is creating, crafting and defining your UMS and CS

Once we have established this we create the cornerstone in which we build a life that is built on purpose and which will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come

Our legacy is our unfolding story of who we are; why we are here; and what we do day in and day out to become the living and breathing example of a life lived on purpose
